What is IT Asset Disposition (ITAD)?

What happens when a company needs to handle surplus or retired equipment? Technology evolves rapidly and equipment needs to be updated and/or replaced. Many companies do not have an asset disposition program in place or do not have the expertise to properly dispose of their equipment. The process to address this is called ITAD and is defined online as "the disposal of obsolete or unwanted [IT] equipment in a safe and ecologically-responsive manner".

ITAD includes things like:

  • Deinstallation of assets
  • Data destruction and sanitation
  • Asset refurbishment
  • Asset remarketing
  • Recycling
  • Reporting and certication

There are many things that need to be taken into account. For example: What about sensitive data on the equipment? How should that be handled? This usually requires an expert in ITAD.
